Lieu 2, Sagstrom 1
Liz Lieu Settles the Score with Sagstrom
What does a world class poker player do when someone calls her a "fish" online? Most of the time, nothing, but in this case an event developed which ended up in a 3-match heads-up duel at the new Venetian poker room, with a
prize fund of $600,000. Internet champ Erik Sagstrom. The film crew was there, Lieu's entourage was there, including mentor and good friend John Phan, and I was there, another "fish", playing in a $1/$2 no-limit cash game at a table next door to the special event. (More on that below).
The first match did not end until after the 2nd match started because the 1st match took a little longer than expected. By agreement, the 2 contestants adjourned.
Phan decided to kill some time while being there for Liz, so he decided to take a seat at our table. Wow, I mean, come on, that's like Tiger Woods deciding to join your Saturday morning threesome at the local municipal golf course! John Phan playing at a $1/$2 No-Limit game? Phan is one of the greatest poker players in the world, nearly capturing Cardplayer Magazine's player-of-the-year award in 2005. I was honored to be there and get busted out after he re-raised my all-in for about $65 (I had A-8), making it a couple hundred to go, got called by the third player who then folded on the turn or river after Phan kept firing at the pot. Finally got to see what he had, anyway, he had paired a 2 on the flop with his powerful 2 3 suited.
