Dec 17, 2005- 8:19 AM
Day 5 at the Bellagio Resort in Las Vegas, NV
6 players remained for the final day in the Fontana Room, which overlooks the dancing waters display outside the balcony in the rear of the room. Their chip counts at the beginning of the evening were...
Joanne J.J. Liu $3,630,000 seat 4
Darrell Dicken $3,510,000 seat 1
Rehne Pedersen $3,225,000 seat 3
Phil Laak $2,505,000, seat 5
Doyle Brunson $2,030,000 seat 6
Patrik Antonius $1,755,000 seat 6
Joanne JJ Liu, final table chip leader going
into the final day, in her version of the famous
reptilian glasses that Greg Raymer wore in the
2004 World Series of Poker.
After spending most of the evening short-stacked, Doyle Brunson surged to over 8 million in chips, 1st doubling up from 2 to 4 million against Rehne Pedersen with pocket 10's against Pedersen's pocket deuces, the 10's holding up. Then, JJ Liu, the wildly dressed (with plunging side-view cleavage) lady, busted out in 4th place at the hands of Patrik Antonius and Doyle moved all in again a couple hands later against Patrik and his pocket 3's held up against Antonius' A2. This put Doyle in the lead as follows...
Doyle Brunson 8.7 Million
Patrik Antonius 4.3 Million
Rehne Pedersen 3.5 Million
After that, a few hands later, Pedersen with the short stack moved all in with pocket deuces and Doyle called with A7, the deuces held up and Pedersen became the chip leader with Antonius the short stack. A few more hands and the chip count was...
Pedersen 7.8 Million
Brunson 5.3 Million
Antonius 3.5 Million
then this...
Brunson went all in with the small blind, Antonius called for over 3 million.
Brunson had Ad 6d and Antonius had Ac 9s
The flop came As 7h 8s, the turn was the Qc, and the river a harmless 2d Antonius doubled up to over 6 million, crippling Brunson.
The very next hand, Brunson went all in with KJ, but ran into a brick wall as Pedersen called with pocket K's. The flop was 10 6 3 and the turn a Q, giving Doyle a chance for a straight with either a 9 or A, but the river was an 8 and Brunson was eliminated in 3rd place, winning $563,485.
Rehne Pedersen - $9,390,000
Patrik Antonius - $8,270,000
After the money presentation by 5 beautiful cocktail waitresses, the 2 players went back and forth, chip stacks ebbing and flowing for quite a few hands, but remaining close to even with each other when this happened...
Patrik Antonius has the button, he moved all in, and Pedersen immediately called with Ad-4d. Antonius is dominated As-Ks. Pedersen needs to improve to stay alive here, as Antonius has a few more chips. The flop comes 7h-6s-5d, and Pedersen picks up an open-ended straight draw, and he suddenly has a lot of outs. The turn card is the 3s, and Pedersen hits his straight, but Antonius has picked up a flush draw, and many of the audience, rooting for Patrik started shouting "spade spade spade" The river card is was 10h, and Rehne Pedersen wins the hand with a seven-high straight to double up in chips and it was pretty much all over for Patrik
Rehne Pedersen - $16,500,000
Patrik Antonius - $150,000
It was all over the next hand as Patrik was forced all in from the small blind and holding K7, was up against Rehne's pocket 8's, which held up and Antonius finished 2nd for $1,046,470. The new champion was Rehne Pedersen, taking home a paycheck of $2,078,185, a gold bracelet, and a free entry into the World Poker Tour's World Championship, which will be held in April also at the Bellagio Las Vegas.

After the overnight adjournment, the final 6 move back to the Fontana Room where the Travel Channel's World Poker Tour set was erected yesterday. An exciting conclusion to this world class event is expected.
During a break in the action, we had the pleasure of meeting Kandi Kroon, 3rd place finisher in the lady's only LIPS championship tournament last month at Bally's, and her boyfriend Dan. Interest in womens poker events is at an all-time high now as 70 or so spectators hovered around the final table in the LIPS event to see if they could learn a thing or 2 about how the game should be played from Kandi and her kronies (Jing Xia Yu, Jennifer Farmer, and Nicole Schachnovsky were the others of the final four at the LIPS event). Kandi went from 10th place when the final table began to chip leader and never slipped up, losing only on a bad beat at the end. "He taught me everything I know" she said, referring to Dan, a dealer/supervisor at Boulder Station and no-limit cash game player.
SEC probing Brunson's bid for World Poker Tour
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating U.S. poker champion Doyle Brunson's buyout bid for the World Poker Tour, claiming the offer and its publication may have violated anti-fraud laws, according to media reports.
So Doyle is a businessman as well as world champion poker player. Not much else can be found out about his bid to buy the World Poker Tour. His attorneys no longer represent him regarding the bid and he won't testify in court regarding the bid. Maybe if he's successful, and gets through the SEC investigation, he'll own the World Poker Tour Championship as both a player and a principal. This man seems to know no boundaries.

555 Players showed up for the final World Poker Tour event at Bellagio Las Vegas.
